As a student in Germany for the past year and a half, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to travel to 24 countries across the world, including almost every major city in Germany. Traveling is something we all dream of while studying abroad, but as students, the biggest question is always: How do you manage the budget?
If you’re an international student like me, studying in Europe opens up a treasure trove of travel opportunities, thanks to its amazing geographical location and cheap travel options. But let’s be real: affording regular trips can be tough on a student budget. Fortunately, with some smart planning, Europe offers plenty of affordable destinations to explore without breaking the bank. In this post, I’ll share my top budget-friendly travel destinations in Europe and some tips for keeping costs low.
1. Prague, Czech Republic
Prague is a favorite among students for good reason. It’s stunning, rich in history, and best of all, incredibly affordable. You can stroll through the old town, see the famous Charles Bridge, and explore Prague Castle without spending much. Food and accommodation are also very student-friendly, with plenty of budget hostels and street food options. Don’t forget to try the Trdelník, a delicious chimney cake found in every corner.
Pro Tip: Use long-distance coaches (buses) or trains, and consider booking free walking tours for an insightful and affordable way to explore the city.
2. Budapest, Hungary
Budapest is another gem that offers a fantastic mix of history, architecture, and nightlife at student-friendly prices. It’s known for its stunning Parliament Building, the Chain Bridge, and the famous Thermal Baths (perfect after a long day of sightseeing). The city’s ruin bars, are a must-visit for a unique and affordable night out.
Pro Tip: You can find budget flights or cheap buses to Budapest, and once there, public transportation is super affordable. Make sure to try local Hungarian street food like Lángos (fried dough topped with sour cream and cheese)!
3. Kraków, Poland
Kraków is one of Europe’s hidden gems, offering students the chance to explore medieval castles, wander through beautiful squares, and delve into rich history—all at a fraction of the cost you might expect. The Wieliczka Salt Mine and the historic Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial are significant day trips from the city that are affordable and important to experience.
Pro Tip: Poland is one of the cheapest countries in Europe to visit, so your student budget can go further here. Try local Polish dishes like pierogi (dumplings) for an authentic and inexpensive meal.
4. Lisbon, Portugal
Lisbon is not only stunning but also one of the most affordable capitals in Western Europe. From wandering the colorful streets of Alfama to taking in the views at Miradouro de Santa Catarina, Lisbon offers tons of free or cheap activities. The food scene is also student-friendly—don’t leave without trying the Pastéis de Nata (custard tarts).
Pro Tip: Use the city’s tram system to get around, and consider booking private flats or student hostels for budget accommodation. Lisbon’s hills can be tiring, but they’re free—and the views are worth it!
5. Bratislava, Slovakia
Bratislava may not be as well-known as other European capitals, but it’s a great choice for students on a budget. The city is small but charming, with its medieval old town, Bratislava Castle, and the scenic Danube River. You can easily cover most of the city on foot, which is a huge plus for keeping costs low.
Pro Tip: Bratislava is just an hour’s bus ride from Vienna, so you can combine both cities in one trip. Buses between the two are incredibly cheap, and this way, you can experience two countries in one go!
6. Berlin, Germany
Even though I live in Germany, Berlin remains one of my favorite budget-friendly cities to visit. It’s loaded with history, culture, and alternative art scenes. You can visit iconic spots like the Berlin Wall, Brandenburg Gate, and the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe for free. Berlin is also famous for its affordable and vibrant nightlife, with many clubs offering discounts for students.
Pro Tip: Stay in hostels or check out the concept of couchsurfing for a free stay. If you’re living in Germany, use regional train ticket offers like the Länder-Tickets to travel around for a fraction of the cost
7. Sofia, Bulgaria
Sofia is one of Europe’s most affordable destinations, perfect for students looking to explore Eastern Europe on a shoestring budget. The city is full of history, with beautiful churches, parks, and affordable restaurants. The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is a must-see, and there are many free walking tours available to help you learn more about the city.

8. Tallinn, Estonia
Tallinn, Estonia’s capital, is an underrated yet charming destination. Its medieval old town is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and you can spend hours wandering its cobbled streets without spending a cent. Tallinn is also much cheaper than other northern European cities, making it a great choice for students.
Pro Tip: Tallinn offers a free public transportation system for residents, but visitors can still enjoy affordable bus and tram rides. If you’re feeling adventurous, take a ferry to nearby Helsinki, Finland for a day trip.
9. Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Sarajevo is an amazing budget-friendly destination with a rich, complex history and stunning landscapes. The blend of East and West is evident in its architecture, with mosques and churches standing side by side. Visit the Baščaršija (Old Bazaar) and experience the warm hospitality of locals.
Pro Tip: Accommodation and food in Sarajevo are very cheap, and the city is surrounded by mountains, offering hiking opportunities just outside the city.
10. Zagreb, Croatia
While Croatia’s coastal cities like Dubrovnik and Split can get pricey, Zagreb is an affordable alternative, offering a rich cultural scene and beautiful architecture. Visit the quirky Museum of Broken Relationships, take a walk through Maksimir Park, and enjoy the city’s vibrant street art scene.
