My experience working as a student assistant in the university

During university, it is essential to gain as much experience as possible. Being a student assistant is one of the best opportunities for that.

During my 4th semester at the university as a bachelor’s student in biology, I started working as a student assistant. By the 4th semester, I already had a good basic knowledge in various areas of biology, so I wanted to gain more practical experience. Additionally, another aim was to improve my speaking skills in the German language. Teaching others is usually very helpful for improving speaking skills and broadening knowledge. But I should admit that it is not an easy way, but it is worth it. This role not only enriched my academic experience but also played a crucial part in my personal and professional development. Explaining complex biological concepts in German was challenging but rewarding. It improved my confidence and communication skills significantly.

How is it to be a student assistant ?

At the beginning of my journey as a student assistant, I was very anxious. I was concerned about whether I would be able to answer all the students‘ questions and provide the support they needed. To prepare, I thoroughly reviewed the course materials and familiarized myself with the practical aspects of the coursework. Initially, I was very anxious about my ability to fulfill these responsibilities effectively. However, I soon realized that it was okay not to have all the answers. I was also a student, just a few semesters ahead, and learning was a continuous process for everyone involved. Professors were always nearby and happy to help with any questions that arose, which provided a safety net that alleviated much of my anxiety. That’s why don’t worry if it comes to answer students‘ questions!  The most important thing is to be confident, and if you have doubts about something, ask your professor.

 

I have been a student assistant in various courses. Usually, I assisted a small group of students (6-10 students). My main responsibilities during the course have been:

  1. Pre-course Preparation: Ensuring that all equipment and materials were sufficient and in working order before the course started. 
  2. Attendance: Checking the attendance of students during each session.
  3. Instruction and Demonstration: Explaining the procedures and demonstrating the use of equipment, such as microscopes. I also highlighted the safety measures. 
  4. Student Support: Answering questions, assisting students with their experiments, and helping them evaluate and document their results.

Where can you find free positions as a student assistant?

Usually, they will be posted on the university’s homepage. At my university in Marburg, it is called the „Schwarzes Brett,“ where various open positions are listed. If you cannot find any information on the homepage, you can ask the international office of your university. Most positions require proficient German language skills, but you can also ask for positions that don’t require German language.

Sometimes, it is also helpful to ask professors directly if they are looking for assistants. I got my first position as a student assistant from my professor, who was my supervisor during my bachelor’s project.

Working as a student assistant had a profound impact on my academic journey. It deepened my understanding of biology and honed my practical skills. More importantly, it taught me the value of patience, effective communication, and the importance of being prepared. The experience also highlighted the collaborative nature of scientific inquiry, where learning from peers and mentors is essential.

For any student considering this role, I would highly recommend it. The challenges faced and the skills gained are invaluable, making it a highly rewarding endeavor.
