Diving into Veganuary: A Plant-Based Odyssey

Ah, January—a time for resolutions, fresh starts, and, in recent years, the rise of Veganuary. For those unacquainted, Veganuary is a month-long challenge where individuals pledge to go vegan for January. It’s a chance to explore the plant-based realm, test your culinary creativity, and maybe even discover a newfound appreciation for veggies.

The Vegan Odyssey Begins: A Skeptic’s Tale

As a self-proclaimed carnivore, I embarked on this plant-based odyssey with skepticism: was it right for me? Did I have the strength? Would I miss my beloved burgers and steaks? Only time would tell. Surprisingly, the first week brought culinary revelations—quinoa became my new best friend, and chickpeas, my trusty sidekick. The fridge transformed into a colorful haven of veggies, fruits, and a questionable-looking nutritional yeast. I also convinced my friends to turn our traditional Waffle-Wednesdays into Vegan-Pancake-Wednesdays. Everything was going great!

Vegan Delights and Plant-Powered Surprises

As the weeks passed, I discovered the delicious diversity of vegan cuisine. Creamy avocado toast became my morning ritual, and I found myself passionately defending the virtues of almond milk over its dairy counterpart. Who knew that a world without animal products could be so tasty? My taste buds were dancing, and my conscience was applauding my newfound commitment to reducing my carbon footprint. Seeing how easy and tasty it is, I decided to turn my Veganuary challenge into a lifestyle beyond January. I had a great time overall.

Soy Intolerance Strikes: The Unwanted Plot Twist

Just when my vegan journey seemed to be smooth sailing, fate threw in a curveball. A seemingly innocuous soy milk based chocolate pudding triggered a series of unfortunate events—turns out I developed a soy intolerance. Yes, the very legume that had been a vegan staple suddenly turned against me. It was like a plot twist in a tragicomedy, leaving me to mourn the loss of tofu scrambles and soy lattes.

Bidding Adieu to Veganism: The Soy Saga Ends

As my soy intolerance became increasingly clear, I faced a dilemma: stick to a limited vegan diet or bid farewell to the plant-based lifestyle. Reluctantly, I chose the latter, but not without gratitude for the eye-opening experience. Veganuary had taught me that plant-based living was not only possible but surprisingly enjoyable. My pantry may no longer be a soy sanctuary, but my appreciation for plant-powered meals endures, and I still try to limit my animal consumption to a minimum.

Reflecting on the Vegan Voyage: A Tale of Two Diets

In retrospect, my Veganuary adventure was a rollercoaster of taste buds and tofu troubles. While my soy intolerance brought my vegan journey to an unexpected close, the laughs, lessons, and newfound love for plant-based cuisine linger. Vegan or not, the journey itself was worth its weight in nutritional yeast, proving that sometimes, the road to dietary discovery is paved with plant-based intentions—and the occasional soy-related plot twist. As a summary, I learned how simple it is to stop relying on animal products, and to lower my carbon footprint.

I did not even choose Passau at first, all I thought of was just to come to any place in Germany, so that I can improve my language skills. Just that. In a nutshell, it was not Passau that I chose, but it was me that Passau – the university city that chose me.© DAAD/ Anh-Hoang
