Islands of Chiemsee
Chiemsee is not just a lake; it has three islands, each with its own story
A place that fairy tales are made of
Chiemsee, the "Bavarian Sea," is more than just a scenic destination; it offers international students an inspiring blend of natural beauty, cultural history, and student-friendly adventures. For those studying in Germany, Chiemsee and the area around it provide the perfect escape from academic life.
Picture yourself standing by the shores of Chiemsee, with the majestic Chiemgau Alps rising in the background. In the summer, the bright blue waters glisten under the sun, and the air is filled with the sweet scent of blooming flowers.
Autumn turns the landscape into a masterpiece of reds and golds, while winter wraps it all in a soft, snowy blanket, making everything look like a scene from a fairy tale: This is the stuff that German stereotypes are made of. Chiemsee is the largest lake in Bavaria and third largest in Germany.
Kenney and Doris two young international students who live close to Chiemsee in the town Rosenheim share their personal impressions of their place of residence. For them it’s the perfect place for a little adventure.
Doris, who is studying for a master’s degree in Wood Technology, notices a special feature of the region: „Rosenheim is known for wood engineering, and here in Bavaria, you see wooden houses everywhere. It’s a beautiful connection between the natural resources and the buildings.“
Kennedy, who comes from Kenya, was struck by the lake’s beauty upon his first visit:
„The view of the Chiemsee with the Alps in the background was breathtaking. Coming from Kenya, where we have beautiful landscapes but nothing quite like this, it was a new and incredible experience for me.“
For both Kennedy and Doris, Chiemsee has created lasting memories. Kennedy fondly recalls a kayaking adventure:
„I went kayaking with some friends, and it was an unforgettable experience. Paddling across the lake with the Alps in the background was one of the most peaceful and fun activities I’ve ever done.“
Doris shares her experience on a university project involving a boat trip: „At first, I was terrified to be on a boat on such a big lake, but after a few tries, I started to enjoy it. By the end, I even steered a boat myself. It’s good to push yourself beyond your comfort zone sometimes.“

For students, Lake Chiemsee is not only a place to relax, but also a popular destination for activities.
For Kennedy, who is studying International Management at Rosenheim University of Applied Sciences, outdoor adventures are the best thing the region has to offer. A hike to the mountain peaks or a bike ride around the lake is ‘such a refreshing break from studies.’
Going to Chiemsee means freeing his mind. „It feels like I can go back – to the mental state of being – home as it reminds me of the coastal area where I am from. The natural environment, the breeze, the smell of water. I find a lot of comfort there.”
Similarly, Doris shares how she discovered an unexpected passion during her time here:
„Back home, I never hiked. But here, it’s different. My first hike was hard, but I made it to the top, and the view was worth it. There is a little book at the top in which I proudly added my name. Now I go hiking regularly with friends and university groups.“
Both Kennedy and Doris recommend visiting Chiemsee in the summer.
Doris explains why: „Chiemsee is always busy in the summer, with people from all over. It’s a great place to meet others and enjoy the outdoors. If you go during the week, it’s quieter and more peaceful.“
Kennedy also emphasizes the variety of accommodation options for students on a budget: „Whether you’re looking for a hostel, a camping spot, or something more traditional, there’s something for everyone. You don’t have to spend a lot to enjoy the area.“
Whether you’re looking for adventure, inspiration, or a connection to nature, Chiemsee offers something special for every student. As Kennedy advises:
„Take the time to explore this region. It’s more than just a break from studies – it’s a place that opens your mind to new experiences and perspectives.“
Doris agrees, adding: „You’ll find not just natural beauty but a vibrant student community, plenty of activities, and a place that truly feels like a second home.“
So, pack your bags, grab your friends, and get ready for an unforgettable trip to Chiemsee!
