Mathematics is one of the oldest cultural techniques. Since it examines the laws of thought itself by way of abstract structures, it is applied in all sciences. Mathematics is divided into many areas. There are seven key areas in Tübingen: • Algebra • Analysis • Geometry • Geometric Analysis and Mathematical Relativity • Mathematics in Natural Sciences • Numerical Mathematics • Stochastics What is the fascination of mathematics? There are, of course, many different answers to this question. But all of them will raise the following two points: • the clarity and beauty of mathematical constructs, • the interrelationship between mathematics and technology, natural sciences, as well as economic and social sciences. Mathematics has a long tradition at the University of Tübingen: The first professorship for mathematical sciences was established more than 500 years ago. The Mathematics-Physical Seminar, founded in 1869, was one of the first in Germany.
