The Master’s course offers a research-oriented qualification in microbiology with a broad spectrum of modern molecular-biological methods. The main focus of the course is on teaching knowledge about the diverse life processes of microorganisms. In addition to the genetic, biochemical and imaging-based investigation of the cellular processes in bacteria and their regulation, the role of microorganisms in pathogenic processes as well as their importance in biotechnological processes is studied more intensively. Academic profile The Master’s in Microbiology is provided by the IMIT (Interfaculty Institute for Microbiology and Infection Medicine), which covers the research areas microbial physiology, microbial agents and infection biology. At the centre of physiological research are the molecular foundations of cellular processes in bacteria, adaptation mechanisms to changes in the environment as well as symbiotic interactions. The focus of infection-biology research is on staphylococci, the most frequent triggers of nosocomial infections, and gastrointestinal pathogens. A further focus is the study of intestinal flora, its role in infection resistance and the development of chronic inflammatory diseases. In general, there are close cooperation agreements with the Max Planck Institutes of Tübingen, the Faculty of Medicine (especially Human Genetics, Medical Microbiology/Virology and Parasitology) and the Department of Geosciences.
