Target group
The focus of the degree programme is on imparting a basic knowledge of the history and material culture of the Ancient Near East from the Neolithic to the end of the Iron Age. The diverse regions of the Near East with their diverse cultural characteristics can only be treated as examples during the course. However, the graduates acquire in-depth expertise in the central research areas of Mesopotamia, Syria and the Levant, Anatolia and Iran. In addition, the students acquire a solid methodological knowledge of Archaeology, ranging from Art History to Social History to scientific methods. In this way, a basis is laid for independent scientific work. This includes acquiring competence in scientific discourse, both verbally and in writing. The course also aims to make students familiar with the important theories of Near Eastern Archaeology. The course is also accompanied by excursions to museums with collections of ancient oriental art and occasionally, excursions to countries in the Near East. Participation in field research projects in Middle Eastern countries is also recommended during your studies. A prerequisite for participation in an excavation in the Orient is usually proof of a teaching excavation in Germany.
