Annotation
The Bachelor's degree programme in Mathematics in Marburg is based on a clearly developed study programme. The aim is to impart a broad theoretical basis of mathematical knowledge in connection with the study of a minor subject of your choice. In the beginning, the basic concepts and ideas are taught and practised in order to gradually advance to more complex and abstract contexts. The beginners' lecture "Grundlagen der Mathematik" (Fundamentals of Mathematics) facilitates your entry into university mathematics and introduces you as a first-year student to topics that are important in all areas of mathematics (e.g. proof techniques, propositional and set theory). Special courses and a professional internship give you opportunity to acquire key interdisciplinary and personal skills. This combines practical relevance and topicality with a scientifically sound education, using primarily mathematical and scientific methods rather than engineering methods. A choice can be made from the key areas of Algebra, Analysis, Geometry, Optimisation, Stochastics, Numerics and Discrete Mathematics. Information on the extended degree course variant (7 semesters): the objectives of the longer degree course variant correspond to those of the six-semester degree course. You will only receive additional supporting modules in the first few semesters so that you can get your degree course off to a good start even if you have less prior knowledge. These modules concern on the one hand working procedures of university mathematics, as well as elements of school mathematics, which are to be practised again and reinforced. You can find out whether the extended degree course variant can be advantageous for you with the department’s online self-assessment test, which issues a recommendation to you after you have completed the test tasks. The test is voluntary and does not affect your choice or application. In this YouTube video, you can obtain a brief overview of the differences between the two study programme variants. An integral part of the degree course is the MarSkills programme, in which you acquire attractive and future-oriented key skills.
