Annotation
To help address pressing environmental and social challenges, environmental systems science studies changes in environmental systems (e.g. ecosystems, agriculture, production chains/logistics), associated problems and potential sustainable solutions, and their implementation. The subject "Environmental Systems Science" is composed proportionally of the disciplines mathematics, computer science, environmental science, systems analytical methods and an interdisciplinary elective, in which students can choose from a wide range of subjects (e.g. biology, physics, chemistry, geoinformatics, social sciences, economics). The study of Environmental Systems Science at the University of Osnabrück is unique of its kind in Germany. Our environment is characterised by complex systems such as ecosystems, human-environment systems (e.g. agriculture, cities), economic systems (e.g. companies, production chains) or transport systems (e.g. logistics, railways). Knowledge of the properties of individual system components does not allow conclusions to be drawn about the behaviour of the system as a whole. The aim of environmental systems science is to understand the behaviour of complex systems and to identify ways of influencing them. To this end, it develops mathematical or computer-based models of real systems and analyses interrelationships within complex systems with the aim of explaining their behaviour and being able to influence their development. Central topics in the BachelorŽs degree course are learning mathematical modelling (e.g. system dynamics, mathematical analysis of dynamic systems), the programming of e.g. rule- and agent-based simulation models, and socio-economic analyses. The degree course can be chosen as a so-called mono-bachelor or as one of two subjects in a 2-subject bachelor, whereby the mono-bachelor contains stronger mathematics and computer science components. Possible careers: Graduates of Environmental Systems Science have a wide range of opportunities due to their education in mathematics and computer science. After completing their Master's degree programme (and possibly a doctorate), they often find employment in research in companies or universities, frequently in the field of environmental research (e.g. climate research, socio-economic research, infection modelling), but they also find jobs without further studies, e.g. in the IT sector, in management consultancy, in insurance companies, in logistics companies or generally in administration and management
