Annotation

The focus of the research-related master's program is the sociological analysis of social structures and processes of change on the micro-, meso- and macro-social level. Based on theories of social differentiation, theories of the origin and structure of modern society, cultural theories as well as actors and institutional theories are treated. Following a specialist core curriculum, an individual topic profile is made possible in the second academic year based on the elective The subject-specific modules focus on the thematization of structures of social differentiation, the importance of the cultural dimension for their reproduction or transformation, variants of capitalism and the transformation of welfare state regimes, and the analysis of the organisation of social work. Due to the free electoral area, a systematic extension of the studies to political, European and migration topics is possible. In the methods area, advanced quantitative and qualitative procedures are treated to the same extent. The obligatory research seminar then offers the opportunity to carry out smaller research projects and at the same time, prepare for the Master's thesis. The flexible structure of the study program allows a stay abroad without lengthening the duration of the course in the third semester. Course related achievements acquired abroad can be counted especially in the free elective area. The master's degree opens up the possibility of obtaining a doctorate and, if the study program is appropriate / the respective prerequisites are available, access to any doctoral studies \; accordingly to the doctoral program Migration Research and Intercultural Studies at the University of Osnabrück. The degree also qualifies for a wide range of activities in the private sector (market and opinion research, marketing, advertising / public relations, press / spokesperson), journalism, for activities in units of national and international administrations, non-governmental organizations, associations and political parties etc.
